The most ordinary man imaginable came to my home state to tell me to ‘get out of America’ while he & Absent Ashley enjoyed the comfort of buildings my ancestors helped build. Imagine standing on the shoulders of the ppl who built this country & then telling their descendants they don’t belong here/2

I’d also like to speak to someone at USA Today to get more clarity on their source recording policy. Can be anonymous. Reach out.

As an expert on sexual violence, I have to add that these ethical violations are a nightmare for interviews on sensitive subjects.

I would never recommend ANY survivor goes public with their story at an outlet that would do this to them.

Ironically, my original interview with the journalist I spoke with was primarily about how "inconsistencies" can come from gender bias in investigatory processes and then be blamed on survivors.

It was the inspiration for this thread--but none of these points made it into any USA Today article:
All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.
Just a reminder that people don’t always realize they were raped in the immediate aftermath. It can take hours, days, months, and even years to realize you were raped, and it doesn’t make it any less true. There are many kinds of responses, including fawning and trying to appease your rapist

I'm the token expert voice saying that inconsistencies in victim's narratives are common in an otherwise brutally bad piece of journalism full of tropes about how not to report on sexual assault.
