There’s often a voice in my head that says, “I’m so tired.” But I’ve realized it’s not quite true. I’m actually grief-stricken by what is happening in the world, and that is, yes, tiring. It helped me to non-pathologize what I’m feeling.

This. Scientists go to extraordinary lengths to safeguard themselves from being scooped. To use a plagiarism machine is just insane.
There is no safe way for researchers to use the systems provided by OpenAI, Anthropic, or any of these other companies. They have all admitted that plagiarism is an integral component of what they do. If you put your work in – even if it's just to touch up a manuscript – they will take it.

The Democratic party has been almost completely captured. How in the world do we get ourselves out of this mess?
While the nation turns against Flock and mass surveillance, SF’s Democratic Central Committee—a body with two Flock employees on it—just voted to double down on Flock and mass surveillance.

SF Democratic Party leadership is a disgrace right now. Completely captured by conservative tech oligarchs.
Flock is under fire. SF’s moderate Democrats are doubling down on the cameras
Flock has lost contracts in many blue cities, but San Francisco leaders are largely defending SFPD’s use of surveillance devices.

This is the clearest explanation of what’s happening in U.S. politics I’ve seen. Illuminating, if not incredibly grim.
It's disgusting watching people buying into the "Tucker Carlson is making sense?!" bullshit and it's probably time to wrap our heads around the fact that the people susceptible to this are unconsciously fascist curious and just need the ugly delivered to them in an "acceptable" package

This is a great point. Go back in time. Imagine if the laws against recording people w/o their consent had required you to pat people down for wires? Or to check your phones for wire taps on a regular basis? That would be absurd!

WOW. I was already a fan of Mamdani, but this 🤯
It's pretty damn impressive how much ground Mayor Mamdani has been able to cover after only nine months in office on a wide range of basic quality-of-life issues in NYC.

I was reading through the numbers this morning, and they're kinda astonishing.

This is *insane*

Again, just mind boggling that it’s the Republicans who are leading this much needed policy. And with a super catchy name too!

It is *insane* that DeSantis is leading the “anti-surveillance state". But it also means that every single state led by a Dem should be able to ban license plate readers in their state. How is it possible Dems aren’t trying to beat R’s at this very popular message??
“[Sheriff] Cordero-Stutz is going beyond the state’s order pertaining to state roads, announcing Tuesday that the county’s ‘license plate reader (LPR) program will be suspended in its entirety.’”
‘Suspended in its entirety’: Miami-Dade sheriff to take down Flock cameras
“To be clear, this technology has helped apprehend murderers and robbers, and saved children from being abducted and found missing people,” the sheriff said.

The water crisis is here and we need to be sounding the alarm about the role data centers play in exacerbating it
Ceres estimates data centers in 7 states used ~3.4 trillion gallons of freshwater for electricity in 2024 alone, ~12X the combined total of Los Angeles, Phoenix & Washington, D.C. Big increases projected (4T to 8T) for 2030. Tech companies say they're working on it, talk about how ag is worse.
Data centers’ hidden water footprint is linked to the grid
A Ceres analysis shows that data centers’ indirect water footprint from power plants dwarfs direct cooling.

The sitting potential of vehicle to grid is getting larger than the elephant in the room.
By 2036, California’s electric vehicles will have more than 3x the power capacity of everything the state is planning to procure in utility-scale storage.

Great new report from

Here’s the thing about Y2K, the ozone layer, etc.

The most leftist—in the sense of *valuing labor*—thing you can do is reject the brainwashing that tells you that heroism is running into a burning building and not the slow, patient, boring, unglamorous work of *preventing* disaster.
I think a lot of people would have died without the work of people like you. The power grid could have gone down, air traffic control, supply chains, medical equipment, water infrastructure…

You prevented a disaster. That is heroism. Heroism doesn’t always have to be running into a burning building

Flock Pitched a Plan To Turn Uber and Lyft Drivers Into Roaming Surveillance Vehicles
A Flock presentation shows the company planned to use around 350,000 Uber, Lyft, and delivery drivers to collect license plate data for its surveillance system.

Failing to see the problem with this.

Had a conversation with my students last term. Is there any other tech that has relied on being so forcefully pushed onto people to be successful? I can’t think of one. Advertised heavily, etc? Yes. Pushed onto people so they have to constantly turn it off? No

Such a good thread. I decided several yrs ago that if a friend asked me for money for a charitable cause or GoFundMe that they were supporting, I’d donate. There’s a feeling of “I can’t support everyone” but really, you don’t have that many friends fundraising. You can absolutely support them all.

I have tried to build a habit and openness to giving to organizations and people i support, and part of that is talking about it with others. For a lot of these pledges, my minimum gift is usually $15/mo. I figure if i don't notice the Netflix debit, i can afford it for good stuff too.

CO2 and Covid-19 virus: We tried to show them that the planet is a unitary whole, with no boundaries, connected by ever-moving invisible gases and currents of air and that they thrive together or not at all, but 🤷‍♀️

This is so true. Imagine if engineers or doctors had to do what writers/artists are expected to do. We’ve accepted (very flawed) AI transcription in medical settings bc we’ve decided drs are too busy/stretched to type their own notes.
I chose this path at the height of the blogging craze, but trying to write while also managing the ever-shifting and constantly shrinking revenue streams that allow you to write for a living is so much more stressful than anyone outside this life understands
I know this is not the biggest concern going these days, but it stresses me out that basically every artist/writer/critic is now expected to create their own tiny empire instead of getting paid by any existing entity to perform a job they've worked to get good at!!!!

I gotta wonder where that energy has been in the face of the GOP and Trump.

I remember Jeffries keeping the powder dry.

But when it’s the left, they’ve got all the fight in the world.

I would simply suggest that if people want to defend democracy and see defeating incumbent democrats as the way to do that, then the failure lies not with the challengers and voters but with the incumbents who failed, often repeatedly, to meet the moment while squandering energy and donations.
I say this with no ill will or animosity: if you hate the Democratic Party, then please don’t run for our nomination.

Don’t use our resources. Don’t rely on our volunteers. Don’t use our infrastructure. Don’t ask Democrats to invest their time, money, and energy in your campaign.
