Along with a colleague, I was delighted to represent the Astley & Tyldesley Cycling Club at the King's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

It was a most enjoyable occasion and great to see both the club and the sport of cycle speedway receiving Royal recognition.

I was devastated to learn that my great friend and club colleague, Steve Harris, had died suddenly last week. He was truly a legend of cycle speedway. RIP Steve.

Former Stoke City Manager Tony Pulis writes a really good article every Friday on the BBC Sport website. This week he focuses on VAR and the poor standard of refereeing in the English Premier League.

My brother John and I enjoyed a great "Evening with Bruce Penhall." So good to see John's old Cradley Heath team captain, the twice World Speedway Champion and former Hollywood actor, after 40 years.

I thought my days as a cycle speedway rider were long behind me. But, Astley & Tyldesley had plenty of riders missing on Sunday for the matches at Hull, so I couldn't let the team down. Two matches, eight races completed, as I became the oldest rider ever to represent the club. Pity we lost though.
