I used to work in a court, well before Facebook launched. We'd get phone calls every day from men (almost always) who'd heard something in the pub from some guy the night before and taken it for gospel. It was roughly 99% BS.

"The Establishment" in the UK obviously does exist. Reform is absolutely right from that point of view. But Reform does not understand "The Establishment".

It was obvious that the Conservatives were never going to win the general election in 2024, even to the Conservatives.

Have Portugal been knocked out? Oh well, never mind. Turns out you can't win the World Cup on vibes. Who would have guessed?

I've not had a TV in approximately forever.

I nipped to the supermarket before the England game, and heard some singing from a sports bar that I've actually never been in. And I thought "I could actually go in there once I've got my shopping and watch the game".

"Burham wasn't an MP when Labour won the election!!!", they say.

Sir Alec Douglas-Home wasn't an even MP when the Conservatives made him Prime Minister. They subsequently parachuted him into a safe seat.

History doesn't necessarily repeat, but it does echo.

Things really are rather grim generally, and on top of that I might be losing my job. Something will turn up I guess, but optimism is in short supply right now.

I think I have just realised that we are, in fact, going to hell in a handcart, and I'm wondering whether people like me actually failed you kids by thinking this shit was done with.

Kraftwerk less than two weeks ago and Sugar tonight. It's been a time of seeing ace things that I hadn't seen for decades and will probably never see again.

Interesting "for balance" on this story. The French Interior Minister and ... erm ... Marine Le Pen.

The thing about Tony Blair is that he could easily be irrelevant if journos just stopped asking him shit, because he can't help himself and will never say "No comment".

Some sense of normality is returning after seeing Kraftwerk twice over the weekend. They have extended the possibilities of the live performance way beyond anything that anyone else is even attempting. It was pretty much perfect.

At some point in the recent past (about 2016, I think), facts ceased to be relevant and "I reckon" became more important than reality. People's imaginations ran riot in bad way: the narrative became more important than the day-to-day.

Most people you meet every day are just trying to get by.

If we had synth shops, people who played Jump would be the equivalent of Smoke on the Water/Stairway to Heaven/Freebird wankers in guitar shops.

If you're looking for clues as to who's going to survive environmental collapse, look at who the targets are right now.

We've gone from imagined "energy weapons" to energy as a weapon. The slop factories are not going to be turned off, however.

It seems to me that "We refuse to bow to a foreign cultural influence" is an attitude shared by the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and the right wing "immigrants bad" of the USA and the UK today.

I'm probably missing something, mind, but they look very similar to me.

I just popped in to see what was going on and it looks like we're doing regime change things again, and I sighed. If there's one thing we've learned, it's that we've not learned anything at all.

They've all been at it, haven't they? It's just like Cummings in the garden: he lied right in your face, because they'd all been at it, and if he'd done anything else the whole thing would have fallen over right there.

I'm no expert on wars, Afghan or otherwise, but if people who weren't on the front lines were getting killed, does that mean that those who were on the front lines weren't doing a very good job?

I'm old enough to remember how an American president encouraged the Iraqi Kurds to rise up against their government and how that turned out.

This isn't the first thing I envisaged myself sharing on this platform, "but here we are", as the saying goes.
