The new transitional insect/crustacean fossil might not look very insectlike, if you think of modern insects like butterflies and beetles, but check out its reconstruction (left) next to a photo of the oldest living lineage of extant insects, the bristetails (right).

As one of the world's most active specialist photographers of ants, I have embarassingly few photographs of European species in my galleries- basically none- even as I frequently get requests for them. European ants are perhaps the most studied of any fauna in the world.
So, finally...

Germany was suffering a brutal heat wave when we were there this month, but it did finally rain when we were in Freiburg and I managed to do a little bug photography.
