In a conversation yesterday, my brain dredged up the ‘Tolpuddle Martyrs’ as an example of British workers defending their rights.

I like to think it had been waiting since high school #history class for an opportunity to use this information, and it finally came.

I’m staying at my parents’ very old farmhouse and noticed these burn marks on one of the wooden beams. Incredible to think about the people who made these marks several centuries ago in order to protect the house. It makes them seem a lot more real.

A wooden beam cuts across the centre of the image, with several wooden pegs in the middle of it and cracks running horizontally along it. A charred mark in an oval shape features on the wood, where it appears to have been burned, and there is a second, smaller mark of the same type to the right of this one. Above this beam is another, vertical beam which is smoother but still has some wooden pegs in it.
