My regular toilet-situated browsing of the BBC archive brings me to Christmas Day 2002, which might be BBC1's saddest Dec 25 of all time. Aside from a Morecambe and Wise repeat and new (albeit obv post 1996) Fools & Horses and French & Saunders, it's pretty anaemic.

Reminded today of that time Steven Moffat, of Doctor Who/Sherlock/bringer of nightmares fame, created a British version of 'Friends' that ran for four seasons and was, by all accounts, rather successful.
