I like the theory that they think they are ahead so they want regulation now to stop their competitors from catching up. At least until they can IPO and cash out.

True! I stared re-playing it this year after Enhanced came out on PC and man, this game is not nearly as good as people say it is. The world is great, some of the acting is great, but the gameplay? Not so good!

Jacob Coxon: how to run an AI doomsday media campaign

It's worth pointing out that the WSJ ran a story about Coxon's tweet before the tweet was even posted. It's definitely a coordinated media campaign. But yes, why not take these companies at their word, regulate them heavily, and impose fines for breaches? Let's do it.

That means December is the sexiest month

Imagine being scared of pink hair. Those people need anxiety therapy.

Glad you're still using Windows 98

And those investors don't have to believe it's true, they just have to think that other investors believe it (and will want to buy those shares later for a higher price).

I know, but I've already spent hundreds of hours playing every 3D GTA game. I'm done with this gameplay. I haven't even 100% completed GTA V yet. If VI ever comes to Steam, I might buy it on sale, but until then I'm good.

Plus, most of the game will be just "you drive somewhere, you watch a cutscene, you do some shooting, you drive away". What could they possibly do to make that formula exciting while still making it feel like a GTA game? They've been doing this since GTA 3.

Let's add Valve to this list. A corpo is a corpo.

In the US, maybe. I'm wondering more about the rest of the world.
August 18, 2026 at 3:56 PM
Off-topic (I guess?) but I'm genuinely wondering what happens once enterprises figure out that they can self-host more efficient models like Qwen instead of paying OpenAI or Anthropic.

Full disclosure: I don't know how reliable those estimates are, and I'm having second thoughts because the whole AI bubble is built on lies and half-truths. But the trend at least seems pretty credible to me.
August 18, 2026 at 2:25 PM
I don't know how reliable those numbers are but here's one link about it:
Inference Climbs to 71.7% of AI Platforms Infrastructure Spend by 2030
AI platforms infrastructure inverts from training-dominant in CY2022 to inference-dominant at 71.7% share by CY2030, with managed inference at $106.8B in the Base case.

No, the main activity is already inference (running the models), and the data centre buildout is presented to investors as needed to serve future demand from customers.

But handheld useful AI is in the future (if it ever arrives). The environmental and social harms of AI are happening right now, and they compound every single day. Every sloppy AI avatar is more carbon in the atmosphere, more water wasted, and one more use those companies can brag about.
August 18, 2026 at 7:01 AM
Your AI-generated avatar was created in one of those data centres, and it used as much electricity as charging a few hundred phones. Electricity which probably did not come from renewable sources. And those data centres require potable water for cooling.

Sorry, I shouldn't be making these comments based on a single picture. You know your dog best so I really do believe you that she's happy!
August 11, 2026 at 4:59 PM
Oh I'm sure she's happy in general, just not in that particular picture. I wouldn't make assumptions about other people's dogs based on a single photo.
August 11, 2026 at 3:41 PM
I believe this is a submissive grin. Usually a response to fear of anxiety. Hard to tell from a single picture but that does not look like a happy dog to me.

When I say that misogynists are missing out, Lockwood is in my top 3 reasons for saying that. She's incredible.
August 8, 2026 at 10:30 AM
Those misogynists are really missing out on some incredible literature, though.
