Lake looks up with a serene smile. (Thinking) “So he’s noticed my ceremonial dagger…!” (Out loud) “Want a better look?” Ashley jumps at that, startled. “Huh!?” (Thinking) “He was flirting??” (Speaking) “I… I mean-” He trails off as Lake scoots around the curved booth seat to sit next to Ashley, their shoulders almost touching. Ashley tenses up. “Ah…” Lake, oblivious, plucks the chain from his chest and offers the pendant out to Ashley, who cups his hands to receive it. Lake: “Here. This part un-screws.” Ashley, slightly embarrassed: “O- oh… Right.” (Thinking) “Maybe not…” Ashley unscrews a washer that frees the tiny dagger from the chained sheath, taking a closer look. The chain is still around Lake’s neck so they have to lean in close. “Wow…” Lake: “Careful. The blade’s forged with a drop of dead man’s blood.” Lake continues to speak, unaware that Ashley is getting a little flustered at their proximity. “It means it won’t hurt us to touch it, but the blade can still cut our skin.” Ashley: “Wow… really-?” He glances up at Lake, eyes heavy-lidded. “That’s, um, the same as my dagger. Except it’s my blood, so the silver in it won’t weaken me.” Lake, meeting his eye: “Cool.” Lake scoops the blade gently from Ashley’s hand, the touch of his fingertips brushing his palm making Ashley twitch. Lake: “Can I give you my number?” Ashley: “Ah-?? Uh… I’m… that wouldn’t…” Lake slides the dagger back into its sheath as he talks, glancing up at Ashley. “I won’t ask for yours. I know you need to keep things discreet. But then you could reach out for updates on Heliotrope. The girl,” he adds. Ashley swallows, a bead of sweat trickling down his neck. “Right. Okay. Yeah.” Beneath the small table, their knees touch; the point of contact is lit up stylistically, and words written in red scrawl from just under the hem of Ashley’s shorts to cross over his thigh and run down Lake’s leg; “Are we flirting?” Ashley keeps his eyes on Lake, whose eyes are down cast, but his body and face are turned towards Ashley. Ashley lifts the bottle Lake gave him to his lips and takes a sip, pressing the tip of his tongue to its rim when he finishes. The comic panels are growing less uniform in size and placement - behind them, in red, occasionally repeats the same question - “Are we flirting?” Lake is picking at his fingernail nervously but seems to catch himself, clenching his fists and placing them on the table to stop the bad habit, which has the impact of pressing his forearm against Ashley’s. Lake looks up at him. “I want to say thank you.” Now Ashley’s eyes are turned down, implicitly looking at the table where their hands lie. A tiny, playful smile is beginning on his face, and he keeps the bottle hovering close by. “Hmm… Again?” His smile widens as he asks that, looking to Lake, his inflection rising.
