Ok I think that’s it! 😅 All that to say, if you see cool cephalopod research, send it my way! 🐙

And finally: how do you study the brain of an animal that can move so … strangely as an octopus can? I wrote about a creative wireless tool that allows researchers to record from octo brains even ask they maneuver around their tanks! www.sciencenews.org/article/scie...
Scientists have now recorded brain waves from freely moving octopuses
The data reveal some unexpected patterns, though it’s too early to know how octopus brains control the animals’ behavior, a new study finds.

Wayyy back when, as an intern at @mblscience.bsky.social, I wrote about the ~octopus death spiral~

Side note: Go check out @scifri.bsky.social‘s episode from today with the same researcher!

Cephalopods are fascinating in their own right, of course, but they can also inspire funky biotech tools! Like this microinjector inspired by squid jets.

If this sparks your interest, stay tuned for my first episode of @scishow.bsky.social coming out soon!

A squid-inspired medical device could reduce the need for needles
The device, which directs a liquid by mimicking squids’ high-pressure jets, could provide alternative delivery methods for injectable drugs.

And for science news, I recently wrote about octopuses learning to use mirrors! 🪞 (and/or checking themselves out in the mirror before they use it for something productive lol) www.sciencenews.org/article/octo...
Crabs can’t hide from an octopus with a mirror
New experiments show that octopuses can understand where an item is based solely on its reflection.

Next up: You’ve probably heard that octopuses have nine brains: one in each arm+one in their head. But how to those arm ones talk to each other? This piece was my first time writing about octopuses for a big outlet and it was a total blast 🐙

Thank you @tessamontague.bsky.social for sharing your fascinating videos of cuttlefish with us for that piece!

@michaelemann.bsky.social Not that you need to relive this but I thought it was a pretty good episode!!

Hey @sciencewriters.org, can we have a summer camp version where we do this for 3 months instead of 3 days? 🙏🏼

We even had an opening reception where food researchers from OSU shared samples of their (sometimes gross) experiments (ex: freeze-dried cheese).

Esp given the current challenges in science writing, it feels so good to have a few moments of pure silliness and curiosity!

It’s probably not going to be possible the entire semester, but I would suggest trying to do a handful of no-tech class sessions if possible! It’s made me enjoy teaching so much more.

Two science writing classes: one about metacognition and the other about animal perception.
