The NZ government needs to step up and demand the immediate safety and release of its citizens. Delivering humanitarian aid is not a crime.

This interception is illegal under international law. The flotilla was sailing lawfully under Article 87 of UNCLOS.

Footage posted by the flotilla shows unarmed people with their hands in the air. Armed soldiers are seen boarding the vessel, shouting “don’t move.” The Greenpeace vessel, Arctic Sunrise, reported that the flotilla was deliberately intercepted and harassed.

The group has named four of the New Zealanders taken into IDF custody: Julien Blondel, Sean Janssen, Mousa Taher, and Jay O’Connor. Blondel and Janssen were on a boat boarded by Israeli military personnel a massive 700 nautical miles from Gaza.
