I started getting skeptical that the AI bubble would burst soon, but the ecstatic mania around it now all but confirms for me that it's still on schedule

Programmers love to insist that the LLMs are incredible for their work but the user experience for almost everything has basically never been worse across the board. Interesting!

They don’t want you to know this, but Bene Gesserit witches are real and have baroque and mysterious plans for your life

No way I would “resist” the One Ring, and I wouldn’t need to. I’d simply bend it to my will and use it to destroy all evil everywhere.

you get to the bardo and it's just ten thousand giant Charlie Kirk heads saying "counting or not counting gang violence?" over and over again

I really have no sympathy for this at all. If they really had serious problems with the vanguard of fascism in America, they could simply work any other job in the world.
palantir's employees, if they donate, are pretty uniformly democratic donors!
I have been surprised to discover that it’s a widespread belief that the politics of tech workers overlap with the politics of the most well-known tech executives. I don’t even think that’s true at like Palantir. Maybe Anduril?

Very pleased by the rare small scenes of hope we get, like the prisoners freed from Mocha today and when Iran blew up those Amazon data centers a few months ago

Great essay by @johnmaus.bsky.social

There’s mention of a mysterious “Whitman-Merton-Eckhart-Zen wizard” … wonder who that may be …

That’s right
I also think a lot of the people who get on board with AI doomerism are themselves addicted to the technology and reason that if someone as smart as them can fall prey to it, then the world at large is doomed, when the reality is that they refuse to criticize their own profound spiritual weakness.

This isn't what animism is and I wish American tech freaks wouldn't replicate bizarre bad racist 19th century pseudo-anthropology filtered through the New Age to make outrageous claims
become an animist and never again worry about whether the machines are thinking. so are the trees? the machines can help us make better websites though

The sixth NINE, undivided, shows us one who does not serve either king or feudal lord, but in a lofty spirit prefers (to attend to) his own affairs.

'He does not serve either king or feudal lord:' - but his aim may be a model (to others).

Probably the most baffling and annoying new groupthink line among the LLM boosters is that critics of the technology won't admit that they have any uses whatsoever. I do not think I have ever seen anyone say this.

It is an affront to our dignity that these people expect us to treat their claims seriously
Some people thought I was joking here. This is a video game with a funny name that basically seemed impossible for AI to get good at for a while because the learning curve is so steep. There aren’t many intermediate steps it can use along the way. This is a useful sign that it’s broadly capable
Only learned today it can win Montezuma's Revenge. That used to be this impossible seeming task I thought was a long time away still

People keep insisting to me that Anthropic are the good guys
Anthropic Is building a surveillance system to monitor activists using a “pre-crime” approach that tries to predict incidents before they happen.

The extensive monitoring system that the AI company is building is aimed primarily at keeping tabs on activists who oppose the rapid development of AI.

New hires and comments in interviews show that the AI giant is using its capabilities against dissenters.

There are so many people who think themselves perfectly reasonable, even fairly critical, on the AI topic who are in full-blown delusion over it. It's pretty sad. Oh well. Nothing to do except protect your brain.
