Perspective: Chicago, with about the same population as Brooklyn, had its safest July in decades with 37 murders.
Brooklyn had two (2) murders in July and 36 for the entire *year* so far.

Safest = 2 murders and 9 shootings in all of January (previous Jan. lows were 4 and 13, in 2018). So far in February: 1 murder and 2 shootings. Totals for this time last year (safest ever) were 11 and 25. Yes, it's been arctic but these are staggering numbers.
January was the safest month for shootings and homicides in Brooklyn since 2010.

We're at 22 days and counting in Brooklyn (fourth biggest city in the US with ~2.7 million people)
New York City went 12 days without a murder in November / December. That's tied for the longest stretch in history, according to the NYPD. As someone who was here when there were 6+ murders per day in this town, it continues to amaze me how safe the place is.

I find it amazing that a very progressive publication is on a campaign to abolish conviction review units, which work on exonerating innocent people. What the stories (not linking, they're too long anyway) fail to acknowledge is that the alternative is...nothing. Just more wrongful convictions.

Good crime news alert: there were only twelve (12) homicides in Brooklyn so far this year, less than half of the total the same time last year. None during the past week. In a county of nearly 3 million people. Astounding.

These numbers are great on their own and even better compared to citywide %s. BK's declines in homicides, shootings and shooting victims is ~ X2 the citywide decline. No other boro (besides SI) improved in all three this yr. BK used to account for ~40% of city share in these categories, now ~32%
Some good end of year crime news: Brooklyn isn't only safe in terms of gun violence, it's the safest it's ever been! Here to an even safer 2025.

Another innovation out of Brooklyn--reduces both recidivism and criminal justice involvement
Encouraging stuff here. Not crazy about the move toward automated enforcement, which often means more fines, fees, and suspensions that can be devastating for low-income people. If there's a diversion program that minimizes those harms while also significantly reducing recidivism, all the better.
