How us it that many other developed countries can do it with little extra cost to tax payers. Low earners in the UK pay little or no tax yet receive free healthcare at half the cost to the government per head that the USA pays.

Dufus, the patients don't pay per treatment. Everyone pays as part of their tax burden and that payment will be very much less than current health insurance premiums, and there will be no co pay.

Perhaps do some research before posting nonsense. A study on Sanders' plan estimated initial savings of £350 billion per year, with no extra taxation on low income people required. Purely by removing the private insurance sector and hospital/General Practitioners billing costs.

Going to a single payer system will save vast amounts of money. It is no coincidence that America has a business based healthcare model and pays almost twice as much per head as government run systems for worse outcomes.
