Not too long ago, Alexanderplatz had a very different look and feel. It's only from above that you'll really notice that Womackas "Brunnen der Völkerfreundschaft" (1969) was once part of a larger spiral design, that was removed during renovations in 2006/2007. (Photo #3 by B Sigursveinsson, 2003)

A little background to this piece: the former school was renovated in 2003 and the sun dial was already heavily damaged. Construction workers "traced" the original design, and removed the piece - being completely unaware of it's provenance. 1/2
"Sonnenuhr" (Sundial) by Gerhard Richter, 1959. Destroyed 2003. "Restored" 2003.

The mural is located in the socialist classicist city hall of Eisenhüttenstadt. Built in 1953 when the city was still known as Stalinstadt - it was meant to be one of several monumental buildings in the city, though it was the only one ever completed.
