The most useful function of a theatre outreach or participation department is not, as people often think, to change people outside 'in the community'. It's to change the organisation itself.

Absolutely. Museums and theatres become 'middle class spaces' only if working class people can't attend them.
Restricting school trips just reinforces the idea that art and knowledge exist only for the elites.

"Don't take the proles to the Tate, they won't understand it."

Utterly patronising.
This feels a little reductive. Theatre’s, theatre companies, museums etc. do a lot to support various group and communities, this seems like it only serves to make those spaces be perceived as even more elitist and exclusionary and as though these spaces are not for everyone.
Schools should reduce “middle-class activities” such as museum and theatre trips and remove references to them from exam questions; a government curriculum review will be told. #NewsInBrief https://www.artsprofessional.co.uk/news/newsreel/end-school-trips-to-middle-class-museums-and-theatres-curric…

My first post on blue-lsky...just finished a production with 29 10-25 year olds, Guinea Pig. A joyous, thoughtful, moving and affirming project. The piece posed the question "should mobile phones be banned for young people under 16" Lots of discussion from audience and performers alike!
