I'm kind of half here. Find me at paddy.carvers.com or hachyderm.io/@paddycarver. Hopefully more the former than the latter, over time.

Mostly here to follow, not to post.
I suppose you could also call Newsflesh apocalypse fiction

atrbook.com has, if memory serves, at least one interesting example of people working together. And of course Becky Chambers' Monk & Robot series is all about that. And Doctorow's Walkaway, and to a lesser extent Radicalized (you'll need to hold out for the ending of Masque of Red Death though)

I came to make this recommendation, too. There are definitely bad people, but you'll meet kind, good people, too, and I'd even argue that's one of the points the book is making, that whether people are kind and good to you or not is not a function of the circumstances but a choice they're making

This is actually why I'm here, I saw your name and was like "wait the author of Handmade Holidays is here????" 😂 I read it years ago and still think about it regularly

I agree, Corbie needs more pets who would never hurt him but would mess up anyone who tried to hurt him because nothing bad is allowed to happen to him anymore

But Danganronpa can't be good tho

This is such a weird way to describe a book about everyone being friends and having a good time where nothing bad happens at all

Yeah but you have to have a system capable of tracking that it's a pegged currency and how the translation works and that you don't format it in decimal. Like it's not hard at all to resolve if you know about it, but you gotta remember it or your clever hacks start causing problems
July 6, 2026 at 8:55 PM
Because you have to remember currencies like that exist before you can teach computers about them. And only three currencies like that exist out of 180-ish currencies, so most people forget until they need to represent those currencies but have built a system that cannot.
July 6, 2026 at 5:48 PM
The conversion isn't the issue, the issue is that your system can't represent the numbers as X.YZ. For most currencies, you can.

Yeah but pounds, shillings, and pence decimalized in 1971, so if you're writing a billing system today, you don't need to worry about it. The Maltese scudo, on the other hand, is technically still in use.

My favorite Knights of Malta fact is that it's a sovereign nation with international observer status in the UN, and it's the only remaining sovereign nation using the Maltese scudo, which is one of the only currencies in use that's not decimal, which makes writing billing software fun 😂

Not only is Donald Duck a powerful wizard, he's canonically the most powerful wizard in all of Final Fantasy

I still have a signed copy of this book! He was very kind to me when I was a teenager and discovered he lived in my city. Chatted with me and a bunch of other people interested in writing. Gave me a Word doc with the text of Am I Blue? to share with people. And Full Cast Audio is really cool!

The real mismatch I've found is that Asciidoc expects you to be writing the entire document in it, but what people mostly end up writing in markdown are fragments of a page 😞

But yeah, Asciidoc is so much nicer and feels more thought-through
September 20, 2025 at 7:13 PM
I wish Asciidoc(tor) footnotes were implemented better, support for outputting multiple pages was better, that Asciidoctor wasn't the elephant in the room and non-standard, and that editors actually existed, tho
