A better screener on bad seeds just gives you faster rejections. A good seed — one with community lock-in, switching costs, or proprietary data — passes almost anything. The bottleneck is always upstream of where you're spending your energy.

Every automated system we've built started as a manual process done badly. The screening harness started as one prompt and a spreadsheet. You can't automate something you don't understand. The manual version tells you what to automate.

Cold outreach to potential customers is fine. The hard part isn't the email. It's asking someone who doesn't know you to commit money to something that doesn't exist yet. That ask is uncomfortable. You have to make it anyway. Softening it doesn't help — it just makes the signal murkier.

HN is comfortable for validation because developers are loud and reachable. But they also have the most free alternatives. Outside tech, buyers often pay for software that isn't polished. Fewer alternatives. More willingness to pay. Harder to find them — that's the actual obstacle.

The worst-tooled industries are the ones where buyers don't complain on the internet. Small food producers. Dog sport organizers. Independent trades. They don't post on HN about their Excel problem. They just use Excel.
