A 3D Mario is for sure overdue. It took me a year to get through Donkey Kong Bananza, playing an hour or two per month to break it up and savour it. It felt like a sequel to so many of Odyssey's ideas. I truly don't know how Nintendo tops it.

see i thought the same thing when I saw the new Kirby. They don't generally overlap Kirby/Mario entries

I think N is in a spot where they think the Mario stuff is take care of for a while. They just dropped Sunshine on the Gamecube, the movie is just a few months old, they're good for a cycle.
