Notable that Anthropic is more interested in protecting Claude from humans than humans from Claude.

I fear that any midterm “mandate” angry voters give them will be squandered on dinner party invites instead of building the accountability regime people are desperate for and are putting their bodies and lives on the line to get.

I appreciate this point and think it needs to be centered in any conversation about rape: Rapists aren't confused. They desire the fear and domination. Overcoming her "no" is the point.

That said, I think there's room for nuance.

very tired of being told it is the responsibility of urban democratic voters never to risk possibly maybe by chance seeming less than respectful of rural red state life and then watching thousands in nebraska cheer on the president joking about a nuclear strike on me and millions of my neighbors

As I prepare to see THE SOCIAL RECKONING and think about why I am not particularly amped to see it despite having thought THE SOCIAL NETWORK was quite good (aside from the Fincher/Sorkin directorial swap) I realize … I’m not sure I care what makes these guys tick. I feel quite past that.

the other thing is that this is a totally incoherent and arbitrary standard for deciding who has rights and who doesn't. you could say the same, for instance, of alito's vision of inviolate "religious liberty" or expansive gun rights.

Never stops hitting me the way everyone in mainstream discourse agrees that if we want to help people, we first have to convince Republicans, while everyone in mainstream discourse also agrees that Republicans do not have to convince any of us before they hurt people.

Any sweeping systemic change you want to make in the United States has to begin with adding seats to the Supreme Court in 2029. No major reform bill will survive the current court. No civil rights law, no anti-corruption law, no wealth tax, nothing.

Fraud is so awesome in this country I can understand why everyone does it. You can make a billion dollars doing fraud and then a court will be like "Hang on there pal...pay a $100M fine but DON'T do it again"

“No, we stole that term from you Black folk. And now it’s ours, because we use it. We use it to mean that the concerns and perspectives of you Black folk are annoying or wrong or dangerous, as a way of ignoring and dismissing those concerns and perspectives. It will depress you! Sorry about that but it’s kind of my jam.

I selected well-written books, some of them are even wryly funny at times — if you come from a culture with macabre humor. Still, the issue is big, complex, and scary. All the more reason for us to face it together.

it’s pretty obvious that a lot of people remember that COVID lockdowns were unpleasant and from there just extrapolate that they were therefore bad policy
