Extra irksome because, while Returning officers are almost always Local Authoritiy Chief Executives, they (at least did and I believe still do) get an additional payment for it.
One could say a task you always do but virtue of your job is part of your job...and that you should do it properly.

I don't know why councils occasionally do this. It's not legal to get up on stage and go "The winning candidate won this many votes, now go away until tomorrow if you want anyone else's figures", so why are they not taking the few extra seconds to add everyone's votes or a photo of the declaration?
In the Ward 20 - Larkhall by-election, Fiona McDermott (Reform UK Scotland) was elected at the fourth stage, with 1150 first preference votes. The turnout was 20.9%.

1 week after the Scottish Election, and the person who has benefitted most from the chaos and indecision of UK Labour is, undoubtedly, Anas Sarwar.
There has been barely a public peep about his own leadership - which given the result 7 days ago, is long overdue.

The scars carried byt the Corbyn years by those who stayed are deep and will take a long time to heal. It's an often understimated factor when trying to assess personal-relationships in the Labour Party.
And yet, it could all backfire for Burnham.
Even if he gets through all the hurdles, there's no guarantee he'll be welcomed.
