Importantly, income and occupational position explain the level differences between mobility groups, but not this growing advantage across age.

And despite substantial gender inequalities in education and labor-market returns, our results little differ between women and men.

The life-course perspective also reveals something interesting:

The benefits of upward mobility increase with age. For people from low-educated families, they become particularly visible in later life; for those from medium-educated families, the advantage grows more steadily.

First result: upward educational mobility is associated with higher life satisfaction.

Much of this difference is accounted for by income and occupational position — suggesting that labor-market returns are an important part of the story.
