NEW ANALYSIS: Global fossil-fuel emissions are set to fall by around 0.5% in 2026 amid the ongoing Hormuz crisis

We've all see the scare stories about a "return to coal" – but the "demand destruction" for oil is even bigger

Here's how it stacks up: www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-glo...

Power generation from coal and gas fell 4% in China in August, as solar and wind covered all electricity demand growth and hydropower and nuclear grew as well. Cement production fell 12%, crude steel 4% and oil refinery output 7%, indicating emission reductions across the board.

What might global fossil CO2 emissions do in 2026?

Based on IEA estimates, fossil CO2 emissions could decline 0.5% in 2026.

A big 2.4% drop in oil & small 0.5% drop in gas, is partially offset by a 1.2% increase in coal.

All very uncertain!

Gas power costs are reaching energy crisis levels again in the UK, which will inevitably push bills up for consumers.

The fortunes of the British economy are still tied to the price of a single fossil fuel. When bills go up, remember that this is the reason why.

China's EV fleet displaced an estimated 1 million barrels of oil per day in 2024 🔒

Over a single year, that avoided demand is roughly DOUBLE the government-held strategic oil reserves of OECD Europe (179 million barrels at the end of 2025).

This headline is of course entirely symbolic - coal still generates almost four times as much electricity and about 8 times as much total energy as solar in China.

The much bigger milestone is that coal generated less than 50% of China's power in the first half of 2026.
