The returning tide at Heddon mouth. I adore shingle beaches, most particularly for the sound of the shingle and pebbles in the draw of a spent wave as the sea gathers for its next. Here, the size of the pebbles makes that sound seem like the cracking open of the very earth.

With several hours to hang around in North Devon whilst eldest son volunteers at a steam railway gala, I've commandeered a peaceful spot beside the river Heddon in which to continue work on the next volume of the Elgar Complete Edition. #DeskWithAView #Grania&DiarmidGoWandering
