Late thirties, lunch in the office staff room, talk turned to pizza toppings. At the mention of anchovies I snorted indignantly, “how do they swim?” Only after my colleagues asked what I was talking about did my description of an olive reveal my lifelong misunderstanding.
Things I’m a little embarrassed to say I thought until fairly late in life. 🧵

So looking forward to Andy Burnham delivering Keir Starmer’s “Reform-lite” policy agenda but with better eyelashes and a Northern accent.

@zackpolanski.bsky.social Hi, Zack. You need to remove the Green Party from X/Twitter immediately and use all other social media platforms to notify folk that you have done so. Then demand all other parties follow your example. Please lead on this. Thank you. Mx

For the first time in my (58 year) life I am a member of a political party. For the first time in my life I recognise a party that seems to think the way I think. For the first time in my life I see a party that values equality and kindness. @greenparty.org.uk @zackpolanski.bsky.social

@brianklaas.bsky.social Final message, I promise. Finished Fluke just now. Apart from taking issue with the “reacting to false positives is an evolutionary good” (works if it’s a lion, not if it’s what looks like it could be prey or water or shelter,) it has been magical. Thank you. Brilliant work.

@brianklaas.bsky.social Hello again, Brian. Just finished Chapter 7 - The Storytelling Animal. Not only am I compelled to tell (read) your stories to my wife, but to tell the story of my telling your stories to you. Storytelling Animal? Moi? Ha ha!

@brianklaas.bsky.social Hi, Brian. Finished Sapolsky’s “Determined” and now enjoying “Fluke.” Just read your (beautifully written) account of Lenski & Blount’s LTEE. Moved me to tears. And all the countless flukes that combined to enable me to (inter alia) read this leave me feeling very lucky. 🙂

Can’t even bring myself to watch the news. The thought of witnessing transphobes popping champagne corks because trans men and women (or *men and women*) are (yet further) marginalised is properly sickening. 🤮

This is not complex.

How many Ukrainian refugees drowned in the Channel? None.

How many other people have drowned in the Channel? Too many. Far too many.

Why?

Because HMG established safe routes for Ukrainian people but not (with one or two exceptions) for anyone else.

Solution: Safe routes.

@glennyrodge.bsky.social A few words of thanks.

PS “Chicken of the Apes” is still my favourite tweet. Because it’s the best. Mx

@emcarrollauthor.bsky.social Hello, Emma. I've just finished reading "Secrets of a Sun King" to our youngest, Isaac (10.) We both wanted to thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable story that made us laugh and cry. Your scene setting is wonderful and the dialogue a joy. Thank you!
