#keineAngst

OK, this is wild.
In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.
It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.
What the HELL?

Apparently, even though deciduous trees lose their leaves in winter and stop photosynthesis, they can still grow new roots belowground! That means that trees don't completely stop producing new tissue, they just do it in a more sheltered place.

No winter halt in below-ground wood growth of four angiosperm deciduous tree species - Nature Ecology & Evolution
As wood growth in deciduous tree stems halts during winter, it has been assumed that wood growth in coarse roots follows the same pattern. This study on the growth of stem and coarse roots of four European tree species challenges the assumption of winter halt in below-ground wood growth of temperate deciduous trees.
