Tambour work was a wildly popular embroidery technique in the second half of the c18th and this c 1795 dress is covered in branches of the fine chain stitch. It was worked on a large hoop with a tambour hook, forerunner of the couture luneville technique, Brighton Pavilion

I managed to finish these sapphic mermaids! They are a little late for #mermay, but at least it's in time for #pride 😌 🧜

I remember seeing this dress at close quarters during a research fellowship at the Fashion Museum in Bath many years ago. The oak leaves and acorns are subtly outlined in silk cord and chenille, the whole a vision in pale buttery yellow. House of Worth c1903 #FashionMuseumBath #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

I wouldn’t feel as if it were Christmas if I didn’t share Balmain’s 1955 cocktail dress. I can only imagine how the wearer felt, arriving in this perfect Christmas gown. To all those who celebrate, I hope you are enjoying peace with favourite people. Sold via #KerryTaylorAuct #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
