Crucially, when the US government reportedly sounded out American oil firms about re-entering Venezuela, companies where uninterested and declined to commit. Also it would be extremely dangerous and a logistical nightmare to implement there long term.

Companies know this! They would deal with: cartel influence, high corruption and major security risks, not to mention how unpopular all of this would be with the Venezuelan people+cartels. I strongly believe in this case, “oil” works more as a political talking point than a genuine economic motive.
