I just have FOMO so that’s why I’m here. It’s quite lovely in this part of the Internet

I remember reading a book where the popular kids weren’t mean to a neurodivergent kid and I felt a psychosomatic shock.
Perhaps some of you were bullied by the 'hot cool rich girls' or equivalent at school, but from my own experience it felt completely different. The worst bully at my school wasn't necessarily popular, he was just insecure but incredibly driven and persistent. 2/

I was bigger than my bully. I had more friends. He hit puberty later than the other boys and was picked on for that. He was actually more 'gay' than me, picked on for that too. So it wasn't obvious.

I never see bullying in films and TV that reflects this. 8/

The scariest most upsetting thing about being bullied for me was always the thought 'why does this weird kid hate ME, why ME?'. It was like me and a few others generated an invisible signal only he could detect. 7/

I'm sure there are as many bullies as there are victims, also I'm a boy and bullying can be very gendered, but I've witnessed this 'damaged lock picker' approach as a teacher as well, and far more than 'bitchy cheerleader squad'. 6/

I get frustrated seeing the 'mean girls' approach to bullying iterated over and over. I'm sure it's real to some, but my bully was like a tick or a tapeworm, he'd just sort of latch onto you one day and drain you. Not from a place of privilege, but from a desire to see you humiliated. 5/

The target (on occasion me but not solely) would finally break/snap/cry/react and then that's when the rest of the class would join in. Blood was in the water. But nobody liked him, they just went with it because... sadly humiliation is social poison. 4/

This boy, who clearly had many issues, would just push and push till he found your weak spot, almost like a lock picker cracking a safe. And he'd do it quietly, so only the victim heard, not backed up by cronies. 3/

Just watched the trailer to the new Carrie adaptation and (having not seen the series yet) I have some thoughts about media's inability to depict bullying in a believable or nuanced way. 1/

I don’t recommend going to sleep after hearing the news of Dolly Parton passing.

However, she lived a long and fulfilling life spreading a lot of joy.
