Paul says, "Avoid idolatry" (1 Cor 10:14). In Jesus' words, idolatry is, "Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command? (Lk 6:46). To call ourselves Christian and then to fail to love, to show mercy, and be peacemakers in the name of nation, race, etc., is idolatry.

Jesus did not merely put love of God and love of neighbor on the same level, but he added, "The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments" (Mt 22:40). In other words, faith in God leads us to the neighbor and love of neighbor leads us to God. It's the Holy Law.
