At the foot of a plant in the Voynich manuscript, a creature drawn in pen, uncoloured, its neck stretched towards the leaves. Dragon? Salamander?

Petriolo, between Siena and Grosseto: the water comes out at 43 degrees, heavy with sulphur. In the 15th century popes, Medici and Gonzaga bathed there.

This story begins there, in the workshop of a bathhouse.

The quiet lesson of Layfield & @lisafdavis.bsky.social's singulion study: in the Voynich the working unit was the single bifolium, not the quire. On their reading, the present order is a later binder's decision, not the scribe's. Anything read across adjacent pages has to start there.

The last page of the Voynich manuscript: four lines in a readable alphabet that no one can interpret. Latin? German? («so nim gaismich»: «take goat's milk»).

Towards the end of the Voynich manuscript: roots and loose leaves in rows, each with its label. It looks like an apothecary's inventory. The names remain unread.

«Del bagno niente»: of the bath, nothing. Savonarola (c. 1450) won't discuss bathing in his book on food: he already did, in his treatise on the baths of the whole world.

We have that book (@bsbmuenchen.bsky.social); it is coming to our Library.

Savonarola, physician in Ferrara around 1450: lasagne are heavy and sit long in the stomach. If you must eat them, cook them with good meat, throw away the first water, and add sweet almond oil and a little pepper.

Did you miss yesterday's #CoffeeWithACodex with @lisafdavis.bsky.social, featuring the realistic facsimile of the Voynich Manuscript? Fear not! It was recorded, and I just posted it to YouTube. Take an almost-look at one of the world's most inscrutable manuscripts.
