Storm of Venice
6 May 2026 Venice Italy Pussy Riot and FEMEN occupied the Russian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Over 50 Pussy Riot members stormed the Russian Pavilion at Venice Biennale. Police were forced to close the doors of the pavilion, as a loud protest performance happened outside. After performing the DISOBEY song (lyrics below), FEMEN stepped forward with blue and yellow smoke, Ukrainian flags, and chants. It's the first time Pussy Riot and FEMEN made a joint action. Private security and Italian Police tackled members of Pussy Riot who managed to get inside and open the door that was being blocked by Police. Pussy Riot members wore pink ski masks and had pink smoke, they raised their fists, played guitars and moshed as protest. Pussy Riot's creator Nadya Tolokonnikova says: _"Russia's best citizens are either imprisoned for anti-regime and pro-Ukraine actions or killed in jail, while Europe opens its doors to Putin's officials and propagandists. If art is meant to represent a country at the Venice Biennale — something like the Olympics of the art world — then artists imprisoned for their anti-war, pro-Ukraine stance are the real face of modern Russia._ _While Pietrangelo Buttafuoco greets his Russian guests with champagne, drones and ballistic missiles fall in Ukraine, thousands of POWs and political prisoners sit in cold jail cells. Their lives are not abstraction, their lives are worth considering - they will not be forgotten and erased as the Kremlin’s stooges hope to achieve._ **_Pussy Riot offers the following proposal — If art should truly outshine censorship, we offer a plan for imprisoned artists (current and former) (_** link**_) to represent Russia at the Venice Biennale in 2028. We offer our curatorial services. All we need is Russia's pavilion to be handed from the illegal terrorists that currently wage the largest war in Europe since World War 2, to those who have spent years in the GULAGs of this oppressive regime, and who explicitly support Ukraine’s sovereignty._** **_We call on Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, Luca Zaia, Luigi Brugnaro to meet with us and discuss the best way to move forward. We work with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on this initiative (_** Written Declaration**_ & _**Motion**_)."_** FEMEN's Inna Shevchenko: _We say it clearly:_**_RUSSIA KILLS — BIENNALE EXHIBITS. BLOOD IS RUSSIA’S ART_** _Every Russian artwork shown this year stands on an invisible pedestal: Ukrainian blood. You won’t find it in the catalogue. But it is the only material that truly holds this pavilion together._ _Russian terrorist state uses culture to disguise itself.Blood is Russia’s only medium. Everything else is decoration. And the Biennale exhibits it._ _Because you can open this pavilion with champagne,__ __while Ukraine opens its graves with shovels. Between these two gestures, you must decide where you stand.__ __And this year, the Biennale has decided._ _We demand that reality enters this space — now. If you exhibit Russia, then exhibit its crimes. Show the bombed Ukrainian cities. Show the graves. Show the bodies — civilians, mutilated, without limbs, forever changed._ _Otherwise, this is not art.__ __This is propaganda.__ __And you are part of it._ The post Storm of Venice appeared first on Pussy Riot.

Tech company Ubiquiti which powers russian war crimes
Today, Pussy Riot have shown up to Ubiquiti’s corporate office in Manhattan, demanding the tech company is held accountable for its role in russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. Since the disabling of Starlink, russian soldiers been panicking: “All we’ve got left now are radios, cables and pigeons.” But Ubiquiti’s hardware has emerged as the favorite replacement - with countless units now doing fundraisers for these long range bridges - which beam communication up to 15km to the frontline. **We demand that Ubiquiti:** Obey U.S. sanctions Acknowledge russian military use Work with Ukraine to stop it **So if you care -** 1. No Kings – It’s beginning to look a lot like russia
**Pussy Riot** is marching alongside a group of No Kings protestors in Downtown LA with a message, a red banner that read “It’s beginning to look a lot like Russia”. With military parades, bullying of sitting politicians, the banning of the pride flag in certain places, and the full use of force by riot police and military against peaceful protestors. Nadya Tolokonnikova was doing her POLICE STATE exhibit at MOCA Geffen downtown , which critiqued the growing surveillance and descent into authoritarianism across the world. The exhibit was postponed this week due to the occupation of LA by the National guard. **Her statement -** > It’s not quite a penal colony here, but a halfway house. Once again, when I write a statement or a song, a demon on my left shoulder is whispering: “How much is too much? Will this get you jailed or not quite yet??”. The answer is - idfk. When the law is being used not to protect freedoms, put to punish - selectively and voluntarily - those who speak out, no lawyer can tell you what’s safe, and what’s not. As my Russian lawyer used to say, “Nadya, stop asking me what’s safe - if you want to be safe, leave Russia”. > > I refused to leave for years - until it became clear that if I stayed, I’d spend the rest of my life behind bars. > > Putin promised his people safety and stability in exchange for their freedoms and many bought into his message of “making Russia great again.” Today, he’s waging the bloodiest war in modern Europe. Russia has become an international pariah, and its best - those honest enough to refuse self-censorship - are either imprisoned or assassinated, like my comrades Navalny and Nemtsov. > > The promised land an authoritarian leader dangles in front of you like a carrot will never arrive. Unless, of course, you’re one of their besties. > > There’s a Christmas song that starts playing after Thanksgiving, the one that says “It’s beginning to look a lot like christmas…. Everywhere you go”. Maybe they just start putting up lights or you see decorations at stores, but it starts and you begin to feel it coming. Well… It’s beginning to feel a lot like Russia…. Everywhere you go. > > My job as an artist is to interpret those feelings. I felt that tingle for a bit now, that is why I did the POLICE STATE exhibit. The walls are closing, the camera systems are getting AI upgrades, you have to censor what you say or unidentified masked men will show up at your home, at your work, at your church. One day, leaving the museum, I stepped into an actual police state - rows of police assaulting peaceful protesters. Today the museum that hosts POLICE STATE - MOCA - is closed due to the actual police state. > > > > It’s surreal but not really surprising. I guess you could say it’s my first artistic collaboration with the United States Military. > > Now we are on the street protesting alongside people who believe immigrants make America great. Art Under Censorship – Houston
_Photo Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at University of Houston_ Pussy Riot organized a public action at the Sam Houston statue in Houston, Texas, in collaboration with students from the University of Houston. The performance was an homage to _Ideal Banner_ (1972) by Komar and Melamid, a Soviet conceptual artwork known for its strategic ambiguity. The banner displays no message and, in doing so, avoids direct censorship- while still functioning as a symbol of protest. The action served as a practical exercise in public performance and organizing. Students were involved in planning, staging, and documentation. The focus was not solely on the message, but also on the structure of the intervention: occupying space, working collectively, and producing an image that carries political and historical weight. This is one of several homages by Pussy Riot to artists who worked under censorship. Nadya Tolokonnikova previously met with Vitaly Komar in 2023 during his exhibition at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University to discuss protest art under Soviet rule. In a 2017 op-ed, Ai Weiwei described the psychological impact of censorship: _“Censoring speech removes the freedom to choose what to take in and to express to others... Wherever fear dominates, true happiness vanishes and individual willpower runs dry.”_ Tolokonnikova plays with art under censorship by looking to her mentors who have also used art as a lens to explore this topic. Jenny Holzer's _Redacted (Top Secret)_ , _Waterboard_ and _Enhanced Tactics_ were also inspirations for this action. She also cites Judy Chicago as a source for public interventions - taking up space - sometimes with banners, masks, and like Judy Chicago's work, with smoke, as seen in the Berlin Neue Nationalgalerie in 2024 (1st below), Judy Chicago (2nd), and Death to Prison, Freedom to Protest 2011 (3rd) The choice of location—the Sam Houston monument—was not made in support of the historical figure but rather to utilize a prominent public site. The statement references both local and state-level rhetoric around freedom and expression, including a quote from Sam Houston himself: “Texas has yet to learn submission to any oppression, come from what source it may.” This project is funded or commissioned by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts. Nadya gave a talk at University of Houston later that day. The post Art Under Censorship – Houston appeared first on Pussy Riot.
