I think a thing people need to keep in mind about evil people like JKR is that their evil is not inherent ("who they are to the core"), but it's something they learned.
We are exposed to a lot of awful, backwards ideas all the time and we might not know them for what they are in the moment.

Bigotry is taught, not inherent. She has reactionary, bigoted sentiments that are incredibly obvious in her work if you knew what to look out for, but there is change in going from someone with bigoted sentiments (that can be unlearned) to someone who is openly promoting and believing said bigotry.
