The composition depicts two women seated in quiet, phantom-like confrontation over a wooden ban-sugoroku (traditional backgammon) board, illuminated from between by the dim, eerie light of a tall floor lamp. While their physical postures remain poised and restrained, the true emotional furnace of the artwork erupts above them in a subterranean storm of ink. The primary visual driver of the piece is the extraordinary torrent of long, unconfined black hair (kurokami) surging upward from both figures. In Japanese folklore and classical literature, unbinding hair frequently functions as an extension of the psyche—a physical manifestation of suppressed obsession, resentment, and the unseen spirit (ikiryō).
