While conceding that ending what they called an “illegal war is better than disastrously doubling down,” the Democrats said the move broke Trump’s own promises. Government officials had vowed relief would be tied to Iran curbing its nuclear program and “terrorist proxies,” they said, yet “neither has been addressed, but the regime has been gifted sweeping sanctions relief it has dreamed of for decades.” The attack is the kind analyst Trita Parsi recently warned about, accusing Democrats who once backed diplomacy of leveling “bad-faith” attacks to make the deal as costly as possible for Trump. If that resistance helps sink it and the US slides back toward war, he said, “it will also be the Democrats’ war.” He conceded the critics are right that “this is not a strategic victory for the United States.” But stressed the final terms aren’t known: “We don’t know the nuclear concessions the Iranians are going to give… The MOU is just a framework. Have been in hospital all day with my 4yo as he gets chemo for his leukaemia and as always while here I can’t stop thinking of how the churches in Jerusalem begged the Israeli govt to let them treat kids with cancer in Gaza—promising to cover every part of the cost and transport—and Israel said no.
Statement of Support for the Work of Augusta Victoria Hospital in Treating Children with Cancer from Gaza December 17, 2025 We, the Patriarchs and Head of the Churches Jerusalem, respectfully request from the relevant Israeli authorities permits to allow children in Gaza who have been diagnosed with leukemia to travel to the Augusta Victoria Hospital on the Mount of Olives to receive specialized treatment that is only available to them there. Augusta Victoria is prepared to arrange for not only the transportation, but also the full care and treatment of these young and vulnerable patients, who will then be returned by the hospital to their homes in Gaza at the end of their treatment. We make this appeal on humanitarian grounds. The treatment for this disease is not available in Gaza, and it has the potential to transform the lives of those afflicted with it. There will be no burden on the government for any cost, since it will all be borne by the hospital. We urge permission for the treatment of these young patients to be granted as soon as possible. As with any disease, the swift delivery of treatment is essential for a good outcome. Today my wife, Maram, and I planted two strawberry plants in memory of her father, who was a strawberry farmer, and my dear friend Refaat al-Areer, who loved strawberries. They were both killed by israel in August 2025 and December 2023 respectively.
May their memories live forever.
