Robinson’s essay is Exhibit A of why I think we need to start by slowing Big Tech down using smart approaches like @alondra.bsky.social recommended and end w frontier model builders as publicly owned utilities. Big Tech has a trillion dollar incentive to sabotage any attempt to rein them in
In the Biden administration, l led the team that developed what was arguably the first White House “AI safety” framework, the AI Bill of Rights.

David Robinson, author of this forthright and sobering essay about risk culture at OpenAI and in Silicon Valley was on that team.
New just now in The Atlantic:

David Robinson resigned this week. He was among the longest-tenured employees at OpenAI—and oversaw safety reports on 12 frontier launches.

He is very worried: “The time for trial and error is over.”

What’s most significant about the study is not that frontier AI can handle “well defined accounting tasks” more accurately than junior accountants, but that it only took 18 months for them to get that good.
“We find that on medium-length, well-defined accounting tasks, frontier AI models are now faster and more accurate than junior accountants, even the best one in our study.” Eighteen months ago they scored well below human accountants

Solar + Batteries:

Save Your Fridge’s Groceries
A familiar story for anyone who follows @volts.wtf.

“The Chronicle spoke to more than half a dozen grid experts…to try to understand why Texas’s notoriously unreliable grid had a remarkably reliable summer.

The answer was unanimous: solar panels and batteries.”
Texas shattered energy demand records this summer. Here's why the grid held up.
Texas repeatedly broke electricity demand records this summer, but ERCOT avoided emergencies as booming solar and battery capacity helped keep the grid stable.

Personally I find this more than a little unnerving. Trying to figure out how to stop AIs from operating from bad intent is no small task, but it seems a lot simpler than stopping AIs that are trying to be “helpful.“
The cybersecurity threat from agents is increasingly more likely to come from a massed swarm of AIs whose only goal is to penetrate your system to figure out how much you paid for your company t-shirts as part of a research effort to "find good t-shirt prices" as it is from bad actor attacks.

Most of the time social media drives me crazy. But every once in a while we get something like this: a fascinating list by @chantalahailey.bsky.social on how black parents navigate the hard, often painful choices about choosing schools in a deeply racist education system
The Nikole Hannah Jones article has invoked a lot conversation on race, school choice for Black families. I’ve been researching how black folks choose schools for 17 years, I have a lot of nuanced thoughts. Long thread.

Making good decisions is hard. But I think the much harder part is building enough grassroots power to make D politicians more afraid of us than Big Tech — esp given that Trump’s president for the next few years . For that, panic, fury etc can be very helpful.
All reasonably emotionally mature adults should ask themselves when they have ever made a good decision of which they are proud while panicked.

Why does our side do this to ourselves?
