You've got to be methodical about these things.

The pitch should be "how much would you pay to see JD Vance cry like a baby?"

Sony bought Columbia from Coke!

"We could move that a few kilometres north and it would affect almost zero people..." "Nope! The line is the line!"

They've managed to underperform all but their worst polling.

With Buck Martinez in the booth for Jays/Yankees games it was a high-wire act every time.

This would be pathetic behaviour from 8th graders.

It's like those ads with Matthew McConaughey where he didn't know how to buy clothes or book a restaurant. Those are by and large not problems for me, and it feels like they're only problems for people in auto-pilot in their lives, or want mom to still make all their decisions for them.

"OK, but *why* was Aaron Rodgers kicking the field goal?"

When you read into the details, it's always "after saving for retirement and travel..." And you could just ... not... do that? and you wouldn't be "paycheck to paycheck". Like, literally every dollar is accounted for from mine, but it's because what I don't spend is saved, by definition.

It's a very narcissistic viewpoint. "I, the reader, know what you really meant better than you do".

Sometimes the orcs are just orcs because they are orcs and you need a villain. And if every story has to teach a lesson, we are stuck with didactic, childish fiction.

I will often draw allegories in other's writing for myself and I think that's only natural - anything well written is going to have parallels to your own experiences. But when it gets to the point that you insist that the allegory you draw *has* to be what the author really meant, well...

Like logically, if you say Gen AI is theft and has no style it creates on its own, then it has to have taken that from something that already existed.

Worse things/better people

I think at least part of it is that they want the throne that comes with "conquering culture" - except that doesn't mean what it used to for exactly why you say.

You are not Cordelia, you will not be there.

But, the monoculture is dead and hitting the top of the music charts just doesn't mean as much as it used to. 10 million is a big TV audience now when that would get you cancelled after 9 episodes 20 years ago.

The one radio station I still listen to is mostly alt rock, and I listen to audiobooks on my commute. I don't listen to random playlists on streaming. Through choices, I am likely to never encounter this song, although I have heard it once, and it left basically zero impression after it was over.

Sure, but when there's 20 hours of daylight in the summer and 4 hours in the winter, it doesn't much matter where they are during the day. Permanent standard time would also present issues in moderate latitudes.

I mean, the Yukon is north enough that the reasons for time changes disappear.

Nothing hammers that home more than engineering degrees, which are supposedly the most "technical learning" focused degrees. You spend four years learning about pipes and heat transfer and material strength and then you get a job and it's "forget that shit, rookie, here's what you need to know".
September 20, 2026 at 4:20 PM
Right, I get that. But there's a context there where the comment isn't falling into the dumb media framing, it's a genuine cultural difference.
