Gender will Remain on the Ballot for Women - Gender on the Ballot
In 1855, influential women’s rights activist Lucy Stone observed in a letter to her close friend, and future sister-in-law, Antoinette Brown, that “It is very little to me to have the right to vote, t...

a lot of writers and podcasters need to learn that they are not entitled to freely adapt any book they take a liking to.

do you want to tell an existing story in a new medium? cool. talk to the author. collaborate with them if they want. license it if they're interested. or start from scratch.
An open letter, to readers, about Charity and Sylvia. I am very pained to feel the need to write this. #queerhistory #pride

If you think a quote from a suffragist in 1889 is too “woke feminist ideology” or that Black people as soldiers or immigrants as patriots are such offensive ideas they must be erased from the public memory, your problem isn’t “woke”- it’s just other people existing in history & having rights 🗃️
Here are the quotes Trump's NPS is trying to erase at the Bunker Hill Monument. Congress must not fund Trump's campaign of censorship.

On this day in 1851, Sojourner Truth, a suffragist and abolitionist from New York, spoke at the Ohio Woman’s Rights Convention in Akron. She probably never used the refrain “Ain’t I a Woman,” but she did mock white men who opposed women’s rights. #WeTheMen

"Lifting as we climb" was the motto of the National Association of Colored Women, long led by the elegant Mary Church Terrell (photo portrait below). "Nice dress."

#ERA time! HOWEVER, Alice Paul and the NWP did not instantly pursue or (for that matter) even come up with the idea for the ERA during the immediate aftermath of the Nineteenth Amendment. (1) #HATM

Another key figure that SUFFs left out is Elsie Hill, close friend to Alice Paul and a leader in the NWP. (1) #HATM

It wasn't a telegram but a letter. One of the most important in women's history. Febb Burn wrote to her son, Now Harry be a good boy and let your mother have the right to vote. Don’t underestimate what can result from one person taking a stand.

Does the cause of women’s rights need more moderation or radicalism to advance its goals. That is a question that has punctuated the movement from the nineteenth century onward. #HATM

They called it the “night of terror.” Force feeding is a very violent practice as Alice Paul knew well, having gone on hunger strike and been force fed during her imprisonment for suffrage activism in England in 1909. www.loc.gov/resource/rbc...

As Paul and the NWP continue their White House protest with the eventual arrests and hunger strikes, Catt and NAWSA become more attractive to Wilson as a moderate solution to his problem of what to do about the women suffrage campaign. (1) #HATM

The NWP is not asking for the vote. They are demanding it. That is a huge challenge to the gender norms of the dominant cultural consensus of the early twentieth century. #HATM

One way that the SUFFs musical could have linked its plot to the nineteenth century was by including Harriot Stanton Blatch. (1) #HATM

I love that the musical underscores the drama and developments in the suffrage movement at the turn of the century. However, I do wish there was a #SUFFs prequel that could call attention to the dynamic woman’s movement in the nineteenth century. (1) #HATM

“how long must women wait for liberty?” was on the signs suffragists brought to protest in front of the White House in 1917.
Spoiler alert: they were also the last words Ines Milholland uttered publicly…
