I will never understand why people put so much stock in the Oscars. Your favourite doesn't need to win to validate your opinion, you can like things without people patting you on the back and going "nice job, good taste buddy".

Getting tired of all these Blu-ray labels using Western authors to clumsily explain Japanese culture. Put some effort in, get some actual Japanese voices to give cultural insight, instead of the surface level nonsense we've heard a hundred times before.

Hong Kong cinema especially is so poorly explored in Western writing. If you're lucky they may mention the 1997 handover, but without any added context or exploration of that.

My resolution is to get back into writing about films. Not necessarily reviews, but well researched deep dives into cult films. The kind of thing which gives you a better understanding of the film by providing historical/cultural/political context.
