My next thing to study: the differential-geometric formulation of classical field theory in term of k-forms jet bundles variational complex is surprisingly recent. How did I miss the origins in the 1970's? The bicomplex is now standard. I can't believe I know so little about it.

Yesterday I visited my daughter on campus. A senior now. First days of fall semester. The freshmen starting on their grand adventure. I love watching them. To them life's just a series of doors to open. We just have to trust the faculty is up to keeping them from getting caught in the gears.

TIL that there is a mathematical operation called a transgression because it crosses boundaries. Like the connecting homomorphism in a cohomology. Or "the transgression of the connection gives the curvature".
