Just back from a drink with an old friend in Camden, which as I'm a Twickenham resident meant taking whatever the North London Line is called this week from Richmond to Kentish Town West. Did chuckle to see the NSE colours prevailing on Bollo Lane signalbox; under a layer of graffiti, naturally.

I'll never forget PE at Thames Ditton Middle School one afternoon, field adjacent to the line twixt T.D. and Surbiton... first glimpse of NSE red, white and blue just like we'd seen previewed on Thames News a few days before. Then the Wessex EMUS. Great days. Great piece, @jagohazzard.bsky.social

I am amazed you don't cut DG more slack. To me he was a breath of fresh air with his melodic, economical playing vs the widdlers. Even the hippie era jams had reasonably grounded, well-thought-out playing from DG.

No, no, no. They were fine until this one. After this I agree. This for many is the first 'listenable' PF album but for me it's the last one that's any fun. It's also seemingly permissible for production values alone to deliver a good slot in this 500: if so it should be number fucking one.

Indeed, if the songs had been done in any other era that wasn't overproduced and 'death by fretless bass virtuosity' I might have liked the album better.

It struck me recently that we who like 60s/70s stuff got from Amy W the feel of what the phenomenon of Janis must have been like - swept into our lives, dazzled us, stuck a finger up to the establishment and danced to her own tune and - despite an attempt at cleaning up, was then gone.

Yep. Axis is the magical one of the three 'JHE proper' releases. I think I could find at least half an hour of Electric Ladygarden that I like more than AYE? As well, so I regrettably think it's the weakest if you take away the pioneer/shock value of first hearing it.

Curiously if you look up the numbers, this album has sold more than any other individual non-compilation Beatles album. Disagree with you on 'not as good' etc. There's a bit of me that wants to say it is my favourite, but one listen to Abbey Rd destroys that every time.
