Here are some of the living leaky dams we built earlier this year as part of our natural flood management projects in Calderdale. We're pleased to see they are establishing nicely & will continue to serve their purpose for years to come. As they grow, they will also provide vital habitat for nature.

We've been balsam bashing at a site in #CraggVale this week.

The balsam was mostly growing in and amongst rushes, which was a bit fiddly but less stingy than the nettles we usually have to contend with.

Visit our Eventbrite page to get involved and volunteer with us.

We've been removing Himalayan balsam at Warland. This is part of a natural flood management project that includes leaky dams and tree planting to help reduce flooding, improve biodiversity, and reduce erosion. Big thanks to everyone who helped out with this project so far!

It was a pleasure to host a stall at the Community Volunteer Fair in Todmorden today, where we talked about our nature restoration work, and got to meet lots of lovely and interesting people from other local groups.

We brought along a few trays of broom saplings to prick out while we were there 🌱🌿

Busy day at the tree nursery, building raised platforms out of old pallets and fencing posts to keep our seed trays safe from cheeky voles, mice, and birds that keep raiding them. The platforms get covered with shade netting to help reduce losses due to the hotter weather and keep the birds out.

We had a good day of planting on Sunday despite the rain and hail. We managed to plant around 1,300 hedgerow trees, thank you to everyone who braved the weather and helped out 💚

Our next volunteer hedge planting day is on Thursday 19th if you want to join us.

We finished planting a total of 1,650 trees on this hillside as part of a natural flood management scheme, which will also include a series of living leaky dams in the clough below to slow the flow of water and help reduce flooding further downstream whilst also providing wildlife habitats. #NFM

Satisfying day planting 528 free range trees with excellent volunteers and good crew last week on one of our sites with protective deer netting around the full perimeter to keep deer out 💚🌳 Most of the trees were grown at our community tree nursery in Mytholmroyd.

Stellar effort from our brilliant volunteer Toby with removing these big stones from the Sessile Oak field bed. The roots had found their way between the gaps, but this made it difficult to lift the trees without damaging the roots so the rocks had to come out.

We had a satisfying day free-range tree planting this week. Sessile Oak and Downy Birch grown at our Daisy Bank community tree nursery, some of which were over 1.5m metre tall, planted with help from lovely volunteers. Thanks to everyone who came and helped with planting and all the nursery prep 🙏💚

It was a very muddy day at Daisy Bank community tree nursery today with getting trees ready for planting next week 😂 Loving the commitment from all involved today with getting the last of the Pedunculate Oak lifted by all means necessary 🙌💚🌱

All nice and dry before a soggy day on a slippery slope installing #fascines to help reduce erosion and slow the flow of water. Despite the not so ideal weather, it was very scenic and mystical 😍

Our wonderful regular volunteer Margot and Dan from @calderdale.bsky.social mulched the trees planted at Calder Holmes Park in Hebden Bridge 🌳

These trees were planted as part of 40 trees donated from our Daisy Bank community tree nursery to commemorate 40 years of the @womencentre.bsky.social 💚

Lots of deep digging going on today to lift these deep-rooted pedunculate oak and the odd self seeded willow. Working in good company and lovely sunshine💛

We are looking forward to planting these fabulous trees in February 🌳 Give us a shout if you fancy joining us for one of our tree planting days.

Fencing in preparation for tree planting this season. Adapted stock fencing with alternating 8ft posts for adding deer netting to keep sheep and deer out so the larger trees grown at Daisy Bank community tree nursery can stay free range and be planted without individual deer guards and stakes 🌳

Another productive day at the tree nursery 🌱 Due to the frozen ground and forecasted rain, we spent the day in the barn processing and preparing seeds trays with seeds we collected locally. If all goes to plan, the trays should germinate in spring, and the seedlings pricked out later in the year.

Happy New Year 💫 We had a frosty start to the year for our first Friday session of the year at Daisy Bank community tree nursery🌱

We spent the day lifting Pedunculate Oak, grading them and heeling them back into the ground in preparation for planting this season.
