Knew it, youngster 😀 I don't know what teachers were telling school kids, I was a grown up working an information job at the time (still am). It was considered entirely unreliable for information I the early days, "I read it on Wikipedia" was a punchline.

I'm guessing some of the people in this thread are young because Wikipedia was absolutely not universally loved since its creation. Paul's comment is more accurate than "everyone always loved Wikipedia and blogs and podcasts".

I definitely remember people hating being forced to use computers at work in the 90s. "I'm fine with the typewriter, why do I need to use a computer?"

I'm also impressed at the people who feel a compulsion to use every single feature their apps have, so can't just ignore a copilot button. I never print anything but i don't begrudge apps having a tree-destroying print feature. Some people might like printing and I know Word isn't just for me.

Everyone here is 38 Paul. They were 18 years old 20 years ago and weren't in those conversations. I remember Before Internet, this lot would be amazed at how the entire web was side-eyed and mistrusted in the early days.

My suggestion is regulate the fuck out of AI, make the providers pay for externalities and prohibit harmful use. What's yours?

That's a great quote but the trouble with it is that it provides little incentive to explore the ethics of anything. We're all under capitalism. If there's no ethical consumption, fuck it, might as well use AI that's powered by children's tears.

Claude is an application not a model and you can in fact run Claude with a local model running in your computer not a data centre. Paul has also previously discussed his experience using local models too.

Data centres = 1.5% of the world's energy consumption, projected to grow to 3% of the world's energy consumption. Farming animals does way more to accelerate climate collapse and eating them is definitely unethical. Try shouting at carnivores, you'll make a bigger difference to the world!

Again you're confusing business with technology. AI is way bigger than OpenAI/Anthropic/Google, there are lots of models that employed zero content theft, all data centre energy is about 1% of global energy consumption. The technology is an approach to building machine learning models which

No there are definitely people who seem to think that the output from AI is incorrect & hallucinated, and can never be trusted. There are also people who question the ethics of the some businesses making models. The technology itself is ethically neutral.

Doesn't have to be insanely energy consumptive (see the DC thing) and most of it doesn't, can't and won't make CSAM. But do you know what is used to to make CSAM? Whatever device you're posting from. Phones, laptop, the internet. No-one sensible suggests banning the technology, instead we have laws.

I'm in the UK where we had a horrific school shooting, then implemented policies that restricted access to guns. So it's more like the position of someone who has lived through appropriate regulation of dangerous technology and seen the benefits.

I'm sorry, I don't understand your point. It is precisely where technology intersects with the real world that regulation has to step in, to mitigate risks and harms. What's the proposed alternative? Uninvent AI?
