Symphony in Green gave its name to my September exhibition at the Arts Club of Washington. Now it moves, in an animation by @cupido.lab set to "Morning Mood" by Edvard Grieg. This post is a farewell to the painting and a first look at my spring 2027 exhibition at Barns of Rose Hill.

A small batch of 200 hand-signed, sequentially numbered limited edition prints of Symphony in Green is now available — the next best thing to owning the original painting. Printed on museum archival paper at 13 x 19 inches and mailed in a protective tube. The original exhibition, curated by Dr. Brandon Fortune in the historic home of President Monroe, closes Saturday, September 26. A landscape of mountains, fertile pastures, and patchworked farmland, all united by the rivers that cut their way through rock and soil to be welcomed by opposing oceans. The water surrounds us and unites us, a reminder to flow, to stay fresh and light, to nourish what we pass through. I envisioned this painting on a road trip. I’ve never much liked driving, so I try to be the best possible companion instead. My mind travels through valleys and mountains, gorges and canyons, while the miles pass beneath the wheels. Crossing state lines, you start to notice that we all share one landscape, traversed and united by the same rivers. At a time when so much attention goes to what divides us, I find peace in the landscapes that unite us instead, in the rivers that flow freely through open land.

When you don't plan how your art will turn out, one painting becomes two, and then two becomes one. The story behind Discovering Solitude and Wandering Mind, my first diptych, now on view in Symphony in Green at the Arts Club of Washington.

The only portrait in Symphony in Green: a woman who is not based on anyone I know, painted on fabric that floats on linen, on air, on a promise made at the opening.

Good vibes abound in this oil-on-primed-paper painting. The rider has the best news and gallops with speed and ease to share it with friends and neighbors. Sgraffito lines, drawn back into wet paint, give the mountains their rippling texture, rendering rock in rhythmic waves of maroon, slate, and violet, with stands of golden aspen scattered high on the slopes. Below the peaks, bare winter trees stand alongside trees still holding green, marking a season caught between two states. An adobe hacienda rests at the base of the range, its pale walls and blue trimmed windows framed by a garden of soft green shrubs and white blossoms. Nearby, a kiva sits open to the sky, its ladder still in place, a sacred space left standing to honor the ancestors and traditions it was built to serve. In the foreground, the ground opens onto a view below the surface, roots tracing quietly through the earth, an underland running beneath the visible landscape, from underland to open sky. Small against this expanse, the horse and rider carry the single note of motion through an otherwise still afternoon, their news already halfway to its destination.

A kind donkey leads a small herd of sheep home through the rolling hills of the American Southwest. Sure-footed and unhurried, he seems to know exactly where he is going, guiding the flock along a familiar path through the rugged landscape. Around them, the trees are beginning to turn, their leaves glowing in shades of yellow, ochre, and orange. The day is bright and crisp, with the particular clarity of autumn in the high desert. There is something quietly reassuring about the scene—the animals moving together, following a trusted guide, as the landscape slowly changes around them.

These open fields hold an entire world of small stories, framed by rolling hills and an endless sky. A girl embraces a horse while her father looks on. Near an old stone wall, a stray sheep tests its escape as a man moves to turn it back. A cowboy works to tame a wild horse, while nearby a woman sits absorbed in her book. Further along, a man plows his neighbor’s land with steady care. Each figure carries on with their own quiet purpose, all held within the same unfolding landscape.

Verdant mountains surround this farm with beauty and tranquility. However, this young man always seems to find an excuse to look for greener pastures. It is the story he tells himself, so that he may venture into new landscapes. Good for him to have such an adventurous spirit and curiosity!

Everyone takes part in the harvesting of grapes. Everyone takes pride in their work and dreams about delicious jams, jellies, wine and foods that will be the result of this day. A bright and crisp day in the high altitude of bright mountains that seem to change color as the sun warms them up.

A sail on the Chesapeake Bay led to an unexpected question: how did this bay come to be? When Glaciers Melted traces 18,000 years of geological history into a single oil painting, part of Symphony in Green at the Arts Club of Washington.

I initially titled this painting U R U (You Are You). I have always loved that, in English, three simple letters can become a complete thought. Unlike many of my paintings, this one began without a sketch. It started as a feeling. For several months, every morning, I walked a woodland path near my home. Those walks became part of my painting practice, even though I wasn’t holding a brush. There were no distractions: no phone, no podcasts, no music, no list of things to solve. There was only the ground beneath my feet, the fragrance of wildflowers, the birds greeting the morning, and the quiet promise of a new day—a time to begin again.
