They also edited together an alternate ending for the DVD where the mother lives, Barney and Robin don't get divorced, and they all live happily ever after. The scene where Ted and Tracy meet is moved from the middle of the episode to the last scene. Some people prefer this ending instead.

The original ending no longer fit who the characters had become, but the creators still stuck with it.

But in 9 seasons, a lot changed. Barney, a womanizer, grew into someone who could be a good partner, but the ending undid all his growth. Ted was finally able to move past Robin and let her go, but that no longer mattered since they got together anyway.

It was always planned for the mother to die and Ted to get with Robin. They even filmed the future scenes with Ted's kids shown in the finale all the way back in season 1 because they planned the ending and knew the kid actors would age if it lasted several seasons.

The final scene is him showing up at her apartment with a blue French horn he stole from a restaurant during their first date in episode 1.

Then it jumps to forward again to gray haired Ted telling his kids the story of "How I Met Your Mother." The kids realize why he's telling them all this...He wants their permission to seek out their "aunt" Robin and ask her on a date.

That's the middle of the final episode, so the second half shows the rest of their lives. Barney and Robin eventually get divorced (despite having a whole season dedicated to their wedding). Ted and Tracy start a family, but she eventually dies of illness.

Okay, but those teens were literally paid agitators. This has all been admitted to. Those were courtside seats that cost thousands of dollars. They were paid by right-wingers to be disruptive and cause a scene. Coach shouldn't have taken the bait, but let's not pretend it wasn't bait.

Oh, that makes sense. And yeah, I heard new Tron only came out because it was his idea. But Disney was still dumb enough to work with him and hopefully that'll change for some of the bigger studios at least.
