Great to see @lewisgoodall.com back on Newsnight! Just like the old days.

Wait... Hold on... I thought Donald Trump said they'd been watching them for a long time, and they were going to do "big harm"?
September 28, 2026 at 7:15 PM
Why are we still be subjected to Paddy O'Connell on @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social ? He is utterly obnoxious. Why should the guest be subjected to his odious snark?

In the movies, this is the part where @edzitron.com hires Jason Bourne for protection, and goes into hiding!
Free newsletter: I estimate that ~50% of AI chip sales - $200bn to $300bn+ - are sitting in warehouses, with NVIDIA selling hundreds of billions of GPUs years in advance. Data centers take way longer to build than hyperscalers are leading us to believe.

Thread ⬇️ The kids have been playing in the garage unsupervised for a long while, and now they're starting to piss about with the petrol cans. Some of them are starting to think "Mum and Dad should get in here and put a stop to this, before we set fire to the place!". @doctorow.pluralistic.net
I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview.

IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing.

Like making your Wi-Fi password "wifi" embarrassing. 🧵

@doctorow.pluralistic.net on p.34 of your book. Could it be that OpenAI is financially incentivising its employees to create the conditions for stunts like the Hugging Face attack, so it can use these for its own promotion? If so, presumably these employees are under water-tight NDAs?

A team of "Embedded Evaluators" with employee-like access at OpenAI and Anthropic? I nominate @edzitron.com @author-calnewport.bsky.social and @doctorow.pluralistic.net

AI giants pledge to act as Anthropic warns internet could be 'swarmed' in months
In an essay, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has urged "frontier" companies to slow the rate at which they improve the capabilities of AI models.

Culty McCultFace
"Please right your right hand. I pledge to the greatest president in history that loves us so much he can't even breathe" -- in extremely culty scene, Trump has his supporters pledge to him that they will vote, then tells them they will "go to hell" if they don't

Here's the full sequence:

I assume @edzitron.com will be tuning in to Newsnight to hear Geoffrey Hinton's thoughts on whether AI will kill us all within ten years! @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social for balance, you really should get Ed Zitron on tonight - or @author-calnewport.bsky.social or @doctorow.pluralistic.net

@lewisgoodall.com @rory-stewart.bsky.social I'm trying to book tix for your show at the Dominion Theatre, but the AI slop booking system at Nederlander Theatres doesn't work properly! Is the "enshittification" of the internet hurting your profits - and the wider economy? @doctorow.pluralistic.net

Question for @edzitron.com - is Elon's plan that SpaceX will "eat" Anthropic over time? If Anthropic is on the hook to lease $1bn of compute from SpaceX EACH MONTH, and can't pay in cash (which it obvs can't), could it pay in stock options in itself? ie over time, SpaceX acquires Anthropic?

I need to ask @doctorow.pluralistic.net @edzitron.com and @author-calnewport.bsky.social a question: was the targeting of that girls school in Iran with a Tomahawk missile, and example of "plausible, not normative"?

Simon Goodley in the @theguardian.com today re Hugging Face:

Seen on an underground train this morning, in the peaceful, diverse, tolerant city of London. "Epitaph On A Tyrant" by W.H. Auden (1939):

'When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.'

Can someone write an article about homoeroticism in this US administration?! Hegseth's talk of "strike packages"? RFK's topless exercise videos? Marco Rubio's clownishly massive shoes (you know what they say about a guy with big shoes)? @samfr.bsky.social? @crooked.com? @stephenkb.bsky.social?

Why is Tom Harwood on @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social ???
Can Paddy politely tell him that this is where the grown-ups come for serious discussion, and point him in the direction of the nearest All Bar One?

In his Davos speech, Trump quoted A Fish Called Wanda ("if it weren't for us, you'd all be speaking German"). Just seen this poster on the Rome metro (strapline: "the end of the world is only the beginning"). Could it be that Trump's foreign policy is mainly based on films? @rory-stewart.bsky.social

@rory-stewart.bsky.social listening to the episode recording yesterday, in which you say "today Greenland, tomorrow...Iceland?". Trump used the word Iceland several times in his Davos speech today. Did he mean "Greenland", or was it a Freudian slip?!
