After a decade of de facto autonomy, the Kurdish-led administration in northeastern Syria is now being brought under the authority of the Syrian state. After 10 months of stalled talks, clashes erupted in January, with Syrian forces capturing 80 percent of Kurdish-held territory.

Hundreds gathered in Beirut this Saturday for the funeral of our colleagues Fatima Ftoun; her brother and cameraman Mohammed Ftouni; and Ali Shoeib. The three were killed in a targeted Israeli airstrike on March 28 while traveling in a clearly marked press vehicle in Nabatieh.

Hussein, 10 ans, jouait avec sa soeur quand un missile a frappé leur domicile. Sa soeur a été tuée. Lui, gravement brûlé. Pour @pivot.quebec, avec mon collègue @sandrobasili.bsky.social, nous sommes allés à la rencontre des enfants du service des grands brûlés de l'hôpital Geitaoui à #Beyrouth.

A few hours after the ceasefire, I returned to a guesthouse in the Karantina that I had visited three weeks earlier. I recognized some familiar faces, but most had left.

Some returned to their homes or what is left of it. Others stayed. The war had taken their homes, their sense of security.

On November 23rd at 4 a.m, without prior evacuation warnings, the israeli aviation proceeded to strike a residential and densely populated area in the Basta neighborhood, central Beirut.

The shock was felt all across Beirut.
