Yes. This is very likely a massive crime! And they’re treating it like “oh, Trump does something outré again.”
One of the things that makes me the most fearful for the health of our democracy is this bizarre behavior by the press in twisting stories to make Trump's activities fit within normal frameworks that are completely inappropriate for the circumstances.
Trump sued the IRS over the unauthorized release of his tax returns, then he dismissed the frivolous lawsuit so that a judge wouldn’t have to sign off on the terms of the agreement. It's not really a settlement. He's just ordering the DOJ to give him money.
