Page 1 of letter to Dean Gemmell: Hello Dean, I’m writing this letter old-school, because I want you to understand the importance of this fight to me, and emails are way too easy to ignore. At this point, I have no illusions that simple argument will change your or USA Curling’s minds, but I want you to understand some things. To start, you have no idea what it is like to be trans. I spent my entire childhood trapped, alone, and terrified. I feared what would happen if anyone else found out who I really was inside, but that wasn’t all. I feared myself. I thought that this made me a freak or a monster. That was how the world viewed people like me back then. We were either punchlines or perverts. I was a child. I believed them. I couldn’t even expect my family to accept who I was. My life was excruciating and hopeless. There was no help to be had. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. I know what suffering is, Dean. I’ve lived it. Page 2 of letter to Dean Gemmell: There are more trans people out now than there used to be. This isn’t because there’s something in the water, and it isn’t just because it has felt safer to be trans in recent years. Part of the reason there are more trans people visible now is because they are still alive. When you said, patronizingly, that my anger could be better directed elsewhere, that wasn’t just completely awful to say to a person in pain from injustice you are a part of. It’s also dead wrong. Right now, nearly all the voices who had claimed to support trans people have fallen conspicuously silent, and many of them, including USA Curling, are taking part in a new wave of propaganda and oppression toward transgender people. People in the media are calling us “insane,” “perverts,” “predators,” “murderers,” “terrorists.” They say we are unsafe. Our suffering is making a big comeback. Most like me, who had the strength to endure this before, will survive, but a lot of these trans kids who are alive now wouldn’t have made it if they grew up when I did. Each back that turns on them now is another straw. Will USA Curling’s capitulation be that last straw that breaks a kid? I don’t know. More importantly, you don’t know. I’ll tell you one thing for certain, it will be part of the weight that breaks more than one. Page 3 of letter to Dean Gemmell: My anger is directed at many, many places right now. USA Curling did something despicable. I have access to USA Curling. USA Curling will hear my anger. And to the suggestion that USA Curling standing up wouldn’t change things, I’ll say this: What the hell does that matter? Since when was it OK to do something wrong because you thought it wouldn’t matter? I was taught, and I believe with all my heart, that the times when doing something right seems pointless are the most important times to do so. That is the difference between integrity and cowardice. History is full of times when cowardice allowed atrocities to happen. “But Sarah,” I hear you say, “these aren’t atrocities against trans people.” To that I say, not yet. Once you start compromising your integrity, your morals, it becomes easier to do so again. Just add the new compromise to the permission structure you’ve already built for yourself. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. This is how a society gets to the point where they are willing to exterminate a group of people. This is why this moment matters. Page 4 of letter to Dean Gemmell: Had USA Curling stood up for its trans and non-binary members, it would have taken a small weight off many people who are currently being crushed. It would have given hope to people who desperately need some. It would have assured other vulnerable curlers that they had an ally. It might just have inspired others to stand up as well. I’m fighting. I worry it’s pointless, but I’m not going to stop. I’m not going to leave the bat on my shoulder as the third strike whizzes past. I’m going down swinging. I’m shocked so few are willing to do the same, but that only strengthens my resolve. To be honest, I’m not sure you, or USA Curling, even cares. Even if you do, you don’t care enough. I’m not even sure that you understand the problem.

This has been the worst 12 months of my life.

Let me be clear:

I've been bullied.
I've had horrible losses.
I've had dreams die.
I've had people betray me and social circles collapse.
I've been discriminated against.

But I've never had it all happen in such a complete and sustained way.

My fight is all about standing against the ill tide that is looking to drown trans people (among others).

If we can get someone to stand up and push back, it's a start--a tree branch we can grab on to, maybe we can pull ourselves to land and start building a dam.

I've been fighting USA Curling and even my curling club about giving into demands and discriminating against trans people. You may think that's trivial, but it's not some policy that kills us.

It's when our communities--the people we care for--go along with it.

You know, most of the trans people I know (especially the trans women) who transitioned when I did have stories of sitting down and asking themselves calmly, rationally, if they weren't better off dead.

All this is killing trans people, and we'll never know how many.
