Dolly Parton is getting the MLK Jr de-radicalization treatment and it's enraging
Dolly Parton lived with a gay man for years. She was a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ folks and a philanthropic champion of childhood literacy and education, vaccines, and the black people in her community.

"We don't know what her politics were"? Please. She lived them. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/27/a...
Dolly Parton’s Cautious Politics Resulted in Widespread Affection
Bipartisan tributes demonstrated the success of the singer’s long-running effort to stay out of party politics in a sharply divided country.

I hate this kind of thing, because just beneath its surface is a smug piety that treats "politics" as nothing but mess and rancor rather than as something with a direct connection to people's lives, and argues for being "above politics" as a kind of virtue. It's so dishonest. Anyway, good morning.

I just have zero patience for a public intellectual IN THIS DECADE, pretending that environmental policy isn’t going to involve politics.

Look around. Pay any attention at all.

Yes, the 60-second ads will lack the nuance of a white paper.

Industry ignores your white papers though.

This is gonna be yet another one of those cases where it takes me a while to get to a recommended show, finish said show, and then randomly tag @theferocity.bsky.social with a rabid thank you six months after everyone else is done. BUT I WILL MEAN IT!
*runs into the room* I’VE GOT A NEW SHOW TO RECOMMEND!

It’s called “Ride or Die” and it’s on Amazon Prime. Octavia Spencer plays a politician’s wife. Her best friend is Hannah Waddingham who, she soon learns, is an assassin. I’ve five episodes in and OBSESSED.

This terrible article portrays the opposition as rich NIMBYs and ignores the indigenous activists and student coalitions (who the writer interviewed, but cut). It also says Trump acted in response to Iran, ignoring that Trump first tried to restart the pipeline in December before the war started.

I started watching Paradise and am constantly enraged while also appreciating the show's social commentary because (first episode spoiler) the tech exec leader built the post-apocalypse town from scratch as an upper class suburban neighborhood with single family homes, lawns, and SUVs everywhere.
Silicon Valley is insane because it’s a museum of unremarkable postwar sprawl where all the ticky tacky suburban tract homes cost three million dollars and the strip mall parking lots are full of insane sports cars.

The real question is, why are American men so bad at sports

wait but are the chocolate covered ones ok? ☹️
one of the products we tested, Hostess Powdered Mini Donuts, had ~19x the amount of a carcinogenic contaminant health officials say is safe to consume daily AND 760x more titanium dioxide — a white pigment banned in the EU for its potential to damage DNA — than the other products we tested combined

I voted Steyer. I was already on board with the stronger climate candidate and the guy who seems able to treat trans teenagers like people, but the possibility of shutting Republicans out of the top and not having to accept "vote blue no matter who" in the general helped me sway some friends too.

I am two episodes into the show Paradise and while the writing and concept have me interested I go into a rage every time I see that low-density car-centric suburbia set as the perfect build-it-from-scratch neighborhood

It's probably best if we just permanently take away the driver's license of anyone who gives this degree of assumed immunity to drunk drivers who pursue children on bikes
We don't see what happened before the driver go after the child on the dirt bike. I don't know what's more concerning, the driver chasing after the kid on the dirt bike or the fact that kids that young are allowed to ride around the neighborhood on a dirt bike.

The fact that he effectively paid companies to not do business with taxpayer money is not as big a scandal as it should be.

Doubly so because he did it during an energy crisis (of his own making)

thoughts on today:

1) the protests are good, actually

2) you should go to one of you can

3) it will do you good to see how many other people also hate this guy

4) you might meet people who you can organize with

5) there are more of us than there are of them

6) we are going to win
